'Medicine' is inserted in the mouth of live fishlings which are then to be swallowed live in the hope of curing chronic illness of asthma. Vegetarians were given the concession of swallowing the 'medicine' put in jaggery (or unrefined sugar). Government made elaborate arrangements, the Chief Ministers themselves led the queue of nearly half a million some years ago. The JVV led a tireless struggle to expose the health hazards of doing this and opposed the government support to this quackery and finally went to court. What is in the so-called 'medicine', it asked. They were told this was a secret that was revealed to the family by a saint from the Himalayas. Court ordered tests revealed there was no medicine in the material being administered! The Court asked for this to be called 'prasadam' a religious term, rather than medicine, which has a specific scientific meaning. The JVV also opposed the grant by the government of nearly 5 acres of really valuable land for growing medicinal herbs to the promoters of the medicine who otherwise claimed they did not charge money for the 'medicine'. The efforts of JVV leaders Lawyer Yellannagari Madhusudhan, Babu Rajendra Prasad and Tadivaka Venkateswara Rao have finally led to this judgement. This is a punishment for contempt of court. I am sure nobody wants anybody to go to jail, but rather they would want the law to be followed and respected, and people protected from quackery, supported by fancy stories of saints from Himalayas revealing secrets.
